Seeing Is Believing

Chapter 7
Meaning For The World

So... What does this all mean?

I believe and hope that this could have major impact on two areas:

1) The World

2) Religion

1) The World

We, as a human race, are on a path of destruction. We are destroying the world - we are destroying ourselves. I am sorry, but it is true. You know it and I know it. All you have to do is look around you and you can "see" it. We are either in a state of denial or we don't care. I believe that we do care, but that we just don't know what to do. We feel helpless. We feel hopeless. We feel lost. We feel that all we can do is sit back and watch it happen. That is what we see happening and that is what we hear is going to happen, especially with the approach of the new millennium. "The end of the world." "Que sera sera. Whatever will be will be."

We need help. We need answers.

This theory, I believe, holds the answers. This theory proves that it is NOT hopeless. There IS hope. We CAN save the world - we CAN save ourselves. But we cannot depend upon someone else to do it for us. It is up to us - each and every one of us.

Let's review the diagram again:

Look at the 'Motive' axis. On this axis, we, as individuals, as societies, as nations, and as a human race, are headed on the "path to the Dark Side," the "path of destruction."

Why? Because we are selfish. We care more about ourselves than we do for others. We strive for material wealth, because that is what we believe brings us "happiness." Even if we feel that, basically, we are a "good" person, even if we feel that we do a lot for others, we still could be "better." We still are selfish at times. As I said earlier, no matter how far we get on the 'Motive' line towards 'Others', 'Self' is a very, very powerful force - the ultimate magnet always pulling us back. We, as humans, know this and have chosen to accept this and use it as an excuse. "We cannot help it because that is the way we humans are." Even if we are not religious, we still blame Adam and Eve. "It's their fault - they are to blame. If they hadn't eaten that forbidden fruit, we wouldn't be in the mess we are in today."

In our selfish pursuit of personal satisfaction and material possessions, with each generation we take one step further on the path towards destruction. This is the path we have been following for thousands of years, since our beginning. And we are nearing the end. The point of this is that we, both as individuals and as mankind in general, are heading in the wrong direction!

Now look at the 'Emotion' (Love) axis. As I stated earlier, the 'Motive' and 'Emotion' lines are generally directly proportional. Where we are on one line is approximately where we are on the other (except during the times when the powerful magnet of 'Self' pulls us back). In our selfish pursuit of personal satisfaction and material possessions, with each generation, we are producing less 'Love'. We are striving to "make more money" so that we can be "happier," and in that pursuit, we are not 'Loving' our children as much because there is less time to do so. The more time we spend "making money," the less time we have to spend 'Loving' our children and families. And the few hours in the day that we have left to 'Love' , we are tired. We are tired. The world is tired. With tiredness comes frustration. With frustration comes anger. With anger comes hate. With hate comes suffering. We are suffering. The world is suffering.

On the line of 'Emotion', we are going from positive to negative. Again we make excuses and try to justify it. There are arguments - "It is quality, not quantity time that is important." "No, it is quantity, not quality time that is important." Well, actually, it is both. The more time you spend teaching your children 'Love', the more 'Love' they will learn. What they learn is what they will know. It is learned through experience, not through books. What they learn, they will teach to their children. If they learn 'Love', they will teach 'Love', and their children will learn 'Love', and they will teach 'Love' to their children, and so on. With each generation, we are teaching less 'Love', so our children are learning less 'Love'. They in turn will teach their children less 'Love', and so on. The "Circle of Life." With each generation, we take one step further on the line towards 'Hate'. That is the direction we are heading. Again, the point is that we are heading in the wrong direction!

Looking at the 'Understanding' axis, again mankind is heading in the wrong direction. We are not becoming wiser. We are not considering the long term consequences of our choices. We are not looking at the "big picture." For example, consider technology. We have learned so much, and technology has advanced tremendously. Although technology is wonderful, it can also have a negative side, depending upon its use. For example, through various movies, television programs, and video games, we and our children are becoming desensitized to violence and hate. War and killing is just a "game" - a "fun" game, just an "image" on a screen or in a magazine. It is not "real." Not only are we giving our children the message that immorality, inhumanity, war, killing, violence, and hate are acceptable, but also, with the increasing time we are spending using these technologies, the less time we are spending with our children teaching them 'Love'.

Referring to the diagram once again, you can see what is happening to mankind. With each step we take in the direction on the 'Motive' axis towards 'Self', on the 'Emotion' axis towards 'Hate', and on the 'Understanding' axis towards 'Ignorance', we - our "worlds" - our perspective - our minds - are decreasing not expanding. To summarize, mankind is becoming more and more closed-minded.
And what is the destination of mankind's "journey" in these directions? The End. Our self-destruction. Yes, it IS that serious.

To repeat yet once again, we are headed in the wrong direction! And we have been headed in that direction for thousands of years. Don't you think it is time that we turned around? Before it is too late?

Yes, the answer really is that simple. Everyone, Stop! Turn around and start heading in the right direction! Yes, the answer is that simple, but what is not simple is trying to convince people to stop and turn around. That is the difficult part. That has been the difficult part for thousands of years - ever since the beginning. We have been being told this same message for thousands of years, and we have chosen not to listen.

You cannot "change" people. And people, you cannot expect someone else to "change" you. Change must come from within. It is a personal choice - a personal commitment. It is between you and yourself, and no one else.

This concept is portrayed in another Calvin and Hobbes comic strip by Bill Watterson.

It's A Magical World. Copyright 1996 by Bill Watterson.

Why these injections of humour? Because, although the situation is indeed serious, we must still be able to laugh. Laughing is an expression of "happiness." Who do you remember most? Who are the people that make a difference in your lives? People who make you happy - make you laugh. That is what happiness is: People ... Animals ... Nature ... 'Others'. Not the pursuit of personal gratification and the accumulation of material possessions and wealth.

So... Why is this any different?

We have been told this message, "Turn around or else," for thousands of years, yet we have chosen not to listen. So, why do I think this is any different? Why do I think that, after thousands of years of not listening that, all of a sudden, people are going to listen to this? Perhaps, because it is different.

We have been "told" the way since the beginning, yet we have not listened. What if ... we are "shown"? Will we look?

One of mankind's problems is that if we cannot "see" it (visually), then we cannot easily (or will not) "see" it (understand it or believe it).

THAT is why I believe this theory and model are so important - why maybe it may make a difference. Why? Because, it is not just words anymore. Now we can now actually "see" it!

Also, because it is shown in a scientific manner, people who would not before, may now be interested enough to at least "look" at it, and it is amazing what you can "see" when you really look at something, or when you look at something from a different "perspective."

"The mentality that modern humanity has descended to is amazing. Somehow, here in the twentieth century we have so many that hold to the opinion that if you cannot prove it scientifically, it's not true."

More Than A Carpenter. Copyright 1977 by Josh McDowell.

And the philosophy - the message - is simple, and the science is not rocket science - it is very basic. You do not have to be a genius to understand this. Anyone and everyone can.

Is there any hope? What can I do?

As I said earlier, it is NOT hopeless. There IS hope. We CAN save the world. We CAN save ourselves. But, we cannot depend upon someone else to do it for us. It is up to us - each and every one of us.

This is what you must do:

Step 1. Stop.

Realize and admit that you are going in the wrong direction. Believe that your future - the future of the world - the future of mankind - lies in your hands, not in someone else's, because it does. Believe that you - one person - can make a difference, because you can. Open your mind. Believe that it is possible - because it is. The change must be made from within you first. Nothing else will change until that happens. Make a personal commitment to at least try.

Step 2. Turn Around.

Don't be afraid. What you see ahead of you now may be frightening, but be brave. You can do it. Believe in yourself.

"Sometimes it takes more courage and more strength to make peace than it does to continue war."

(Wye Peace Accord 1998)

(Wye? For the sake of our world. For the sake of mankind.)

Step 3. Go.

Make a personal commitment to try to become a "better" person. Strive to get as high as you can on each of the three axes lines ('Understanding', 'Emotion', and 'Motive') as shown in the following diagram:

1) Learn more.

2) Learn (and then teach) more positive emotions - more 'Love'.

3) Do more for others. "A little kindness and consideration goes a long, long way." It creates a "ripple effect", a "wave" which can start with one person and spread to the entire world. It is possible.

"That is it? Only 3 steps? Is it really that simple?" Yes, it is. Think about it. If we had 'Love' would we have:

All You Need Is Love
Words and Music by John Lennon and Paul McCartney

There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game,
It's easy.

There's nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time,
It's easy.

There's nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be,
It's easy.

All you need is Love.

Conclusion

Can we do it? Can we save the world? Can we save ourselves? The answer is "Yes." But we - each and every one of us - has to try, and we cannot wait for someone else to do it first. You must do it first. The time is now. We cannot wait any longer.

Man In The Mirror

Written & Composed by Siedah Garrett & Glen Ballard
Recorded by Michael Jackson

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
No message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make the change
You gotta get it right, while you got the time
'Cause when you close your heart
Then you close your mind!

It is entirely up to you. Your future - our future - is in your own hands. All someone else can do for you is show you the way. Ultimately, it is your decision - and your decision alone - as to what you do. It is your choice. It is time to stop blaming Adam and Eve and everyone else, time to stop complaining, criticizing, and making excuses, and time to start taking responsibility and being accountable for our own actions (or inaction) - each and every one of us.

"My hands are small I know,
But they're not yours, they are my own ....
We are God's eyes, God's hands, God's mind ..."

(Jewel)
Hands From the Album Spirit (1998)

I believe that this theory and model show "The Way." In effect, it is a map. The "paths" are the three axes, and we all must follow these paths in the right direction. It is that simple. What you choose to do with this information is your decision. The direction on these paths that you choose to take is your choice. But, for the sake of mankind, and for the sake of our beautiful planet, I hope that we all "Stop and Turn Around" - before it is too late.
